Maria M. Abate (nee Mossa), 95, of Kinderhook NY since 2017 passed away at her daughters house on January 20, 2019. Born July 5, 1923 she lived in West New York until 1990 then relocated to North Bergen.
An Italian war bride she met her husband James at a Red Cross Dance in Italy during the war. They married June 1, 1946 in Italy. She was a Democratic County Committeewoman in West New York for over a decade. In the early 70's she worked as an interpreter at the West New York Police Community Relations Bureau , mini precinct, under Capt. Richard Warnock, retiring in the 90's. Her work primarily encompassed helping the hispanic community navigate immigration problems, citizenship and informing the residents of West New York the services available.
Beloved wife of the late James J. Abate. Devoted mother of Janice Abate and her husband James Nadel and James Abate and his wife Pat. Dear sister of Carmela Gabriele, Margherita Maldari, Vittorio Mossa all of Italy and the late Josephine Cerini, Lilana Albanese and Giovanni. She will be missed by her loving nieces, nephews and her neighbors in North Bergen.
